If you haven’t heard, a building exploded in NW Houston this morning. One of my coworkers was awakened by the explosion and is describing it as the loudest roll of thunder he’s ever heard, times 50. He’s staying about half a mile from where it happened.

Wow, shocking there was only one reported injury and no fatalities. At least that’s some good news.

Damn. Thank goodness it happened when most everyone was in bed...

I thought this was going to be a post about an explosion of building because no zoning or planning.

To be honest it would be less serious if there was some semblance of zoning or planning in Spring Branch. People’s houses back up to the facility where this happened.

I’m reminded of the gas explosion in Brenham so many years ago. We felt the shockwave in our apartment in Houston.

Al so, there was a pretty serious chemical fire in this area a few years ago that had a lot of the residents and schools trapped indoors. this warehouse had chemicals in its inventory that it didn’t disclose to t he fire department which made putting out the fire very difficult. Again, a street away from people’s homes. And a lot of these homes are actually pretty nice, the zoning here is jus t mega whack.

That meant more people were home to experience their homes being ruined around them. On the other hand, it meant there were fewer workers at the facility.
Personally, I am thankful that I wasn’t home when the tornado hit our house. Dealing with the damage was traumatic enough.

Houstonians are proud of the lack of zoning. Doing what you want with your land is a fundamental right. That is, until your neighbors build something ugly, smelly, or dangerous.

I’ll admit, there are advantages. My wife used to live in that area and the access to pretty much anything you could ever need in under 10 minutes is pretty nice, and others feel the same way as its really been taking off for re-develop ment.

Seems certain that there would have been many deaths
if it had happened a couple hours later...

I chose my accomm odations carefully so that even during rush hour, I’m 20 minutes from downtown and 10 minutes from the office where I normally work. I have a variety of food and shopping choices all within a 10 minute drive. You’re right, it’s convenient. But it’s also a mishmash of low, mid and high-end development punctuated by little hellholes everywhere .

Just heard two fatalities

I’m surprised the media was so quick to jump on the definitive “one injury” story so quickly, without leaving much doubt that it could be worse. Looked horrible.

Not terribly surprised sadly. The news often seems quick to jump on the human toll, be it in a positive or negative light (everyone is fine! everyone died!) . Fortunately didn’t happen during morning rush.
Our office is relatively close and has a bit of superficial damage. Lots of homes and businesses close by are damaged. I live far out and people heard it, but personally didn’t .

I had friend move down with her husband and the shadiness of some selling real estate agents regarding flooding . “Well the structure didn’t experience damage...”

If it flooded once, it will again. It’s not a matter of if, but when.

Damn, I was hoping there would be no victims but sadly there are 2. My condolences to their family & friends.
